How the paver calculator works

Paver count uses the project area and the footprint of one paver. Base mode calculates each layer separately so you can order the gravel base and bedding sand in the units suppliers use.

Paver area = length x width / 144
Pavers = project area / paver area x (1 + waste)
Layer volume = area x depth / 12 / 27
Layer tons = cubic yards x material density

Before ordering paver materials

  • Confirm the base depth: patios, walkways and driveways may require different compacted depths and subgrade preparation.
  • Account for the pattern: running bond, herringbone and curved edges can change cuts and waste.
  • Separate the layers: base gravel, bedding sand and jointing sand are different products with different coverage.
  • Check packaging: pavers may be sold by piece, pallet or square-foot coverage rather than individually.

Paver calculator FAQ

How many pavers do I need?

Measure the project area, calculate the footprint of one paver and divide the total area by that footprint. Add waste for cuts, edges and breakage, then round up to whole pavers or pallets.

How much paver base do I need?

Multiply the project area by the compacted base depth, then convert the volume to cubic yards and tons using the supplier's density. Patios, walkways and driveways can require different specifications.

How much sand goes under pavers?

Use the bedding depth specified by your paver system. A thin bedding layer is common, but the correct material and depth depend on the base design and installation instructions.

Does this calculate polymeric jointing sand?

No. Jointing sand bag coverage depends on paver size, joint width, joint depth and the product label. Use the manufacturer's coverage table for the final jointing order.

Should I add waste to my paver order?

Yes. A simple rectangle with few cuts may need less waste than a herringbone pattern, curves or many borders. Choose a waste percentage that matches the layout and keep a replacement piece if possible.
