For a rectangular lawn, multiply length by width by depth. Convert inches to feet before calculating cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards.

It depends on the project. A topdressing is usually much thinner than the prepared soil layer for a new lawn. Use the presets only as starting points and confirm the final depth for your soil, seed or sod.
At a 1-inch depth, 1,000 square feet needs about 3.09 cubic yards before extra allowance. At 4 inches, it needs about 12.35 cubic yards before extra allowance.
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. At 0.75 cubic feet per bag, plan on 36 bags before adding extra for settling.
